Its name is derived from the fact that it was first isolated from meat (carnus) over a century ago in 1905. However, its deficiency was not described until 1972. L-carnitine exists in the body in the form of L-carnitine or Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR), and is a naturally occurring amino acid synthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine, inside the body.
